On March 8, 1963, NASA had announced the selection of the Northrop Corporation for industrial support on Ranger Blocks III and IV and as contractor for producing Ranger Block V spacecraft (see Aviation Week, March 18, 1963). On December 13, 1963, NASA Headquarters directed JPL to terminate all activities with the Ranger Block V (see NASA Astronautics and Aeronautics, 1963, p. 477). Following this, Northrop began a technology transfer study (see Northrop Space Laboratories, Technology Utilization Review and Analysis, Final Report, Vol. II, NSL 64-192, September 1964).
